Generally costly-mostly inept, some less than transparent , some economical with the truth and nepotistic. No , not the Houses of Parliament but PCCs.
Mainly men and ladies who ‘lunch’ being paid to be the fall guys for Police cuts and Privatisation. Bristol , where I live is particularly lucky to have two ‘independants’ (NOT). As PCC and elected Mayor . I will be writing my thoughts about these two in the future- for now unimpressed seems too polite. Strangely the only party wishing to do away with PCCs is UKIP.
It’s fair to say that almost everyone is scared shitless of losing whatever they have. There is, in spite of what some of the pundits say, the same class divide in Britain as there always was – it’s just circumspect that they pretend it doesn’t exist- yes it’s blurred and a little fuzzy in some ways but no, still there.
I’m working class and proud of that tradition- I don’t watch soaps/read the Sun/Do the lottery/go on package holidays to Spain/watch football/Drink/Do drugs. Yes , I’m proper boring……..
I read Orwell/Nabokov/Elliot/Dickens/Shakespeare et al. I believe in the Trades Union movement ,but no more in our system of government , which fails the majority. Should I say perhaps , I believe in the concept of Trades Unions not the currently constituted shams that most are.
Working class males have been emasculated ,and the class is now returning to a servant class to service the rich- bollocks to them…
Britains industrial base has changed out of all recognition , it’s not true to say that manufacturing has vanished , but entirely right that it is no longer the universal force it was across the board . What we see are pockets of certain industries continuing to grow – but these tend to be niche markets and not labour intensive.
When I hear commentators refer to ‘the Financial Services Industry’ I cringe…..
There are no unskilled jobs and few semi-skilled jobs…everyone knows that. Successive governments have used the artificially inflated Housing market to give the illusion of recovery- private sector employment rose substantially when the Govt. moved tranches of public sector workers into the private sector- and maybe hundreds of thousands of people ‘sanctioned’ by the JCP no longer feature. Added to this the near million on ‘virtual jobs’ (Zero Hours) and the future looks decidedly UN-orange.
Call me ‘old fashioned’ but you either have a job working in a shop, canteen or factory or you don’t….
The Tories conflation of Deficit and Debt has to be one of the most disingenuous Con tricks even for those heartless bastards…
We need to build on ‘Brown field’ sites – Housing, cheap and plentiful built by the army of unemployed paid a living wage, re-skilled and everyone offered a job in the process. Why paying £60-70 benefit + £80 HB + CT say roughly £180 a week on benefits when, at a stroke you could regenerate whole communities- the money you can use to fight far flung wars with surely can be spent at home ??
Houses should be built by the Government and sold at or slightly above cost price- this would automatically burst the Housing bubble and mean affordable rents- but Governments don’t want this do they?
No-one wants to lose their job because of the consequences of that .. so it makes for an acquiescent and downtrodden Labour force forever kept in wage slavery paying 5 times the real cost of their house to the Banks. Recovery sorted ……….
The best thing that could be said in support of UKIP is that it is a more amateurish copy of it’s corporate party brothers and sisters , quintessentially pub, cricket and ‘olde worlde’- on the face of it.. But its underbelly tells a different story – single issue parties with few coherent policies might seem like a breath of fresh air , but this one is regressive , reactionary , blustering and misguided.
There are currently NO POLITICAL PARTIES worthy of my vote – or yours come to that. The idea of voting is not to vote for the least worst option but to vote for the party which approximates your views and aspirations.
I will not be bullied or cajoled by the ‘old chestnut’ people died to get you the vote- undoubtedly they did, and I am eternally grateful. That was THEN when politics actually meant something different – not now , where PPE graduates and professional politicians of all shades collude to rob the populace of everything in the pot.
A party for THE PEOPLE – that means ALL of the people not SOME is what is needed. Just imagine harnessing the power of the internet to create an Anti-party movement, it wouldn’t need canvassers/door knockers/posters/TV ads/local organisation – just a focal point and real world policies.
Very much like the Positive Money campaign , which I wholeheartedly support…just imagine what WE could do…
I remember one of my first brushes with undergraduate study- as a young, idealistic working class socialist, was Criminology at the Open University. (wrong time/wrong job/wrong circumstances-but it was free!). Apart from learning about Anomie,Chicago School and Deviancy Amplification, I distinctly remember the idea that we are all prone to romanticise about the past-especially the old perennial ‘before the war’.
My recollection is that I subscribed to the ‘grown up’ assertion that these ‘folk memories’ were a natural part of the psyche, and that, in reality, there never were ‘golden times’, there was always a fly- or many flies in the ointment.
Well , that was at least 35 years ago ,and I can say with some certainty- nay, definitively- I can remember a Golden Age and like Winston Smith in 1984 I know it existed and wonder if it could ever exist again ?
That successive politicians seem to use Orwells 1984 as a blueprint for government instead of a dystopian warning is more than worrying. ( Ok-so I have some admissions I have been a member of the following political parties at disparate times: Communist Party of G.B.Marxist/Leninist/ Labour Party / and more recently, and to my ultimate shame Libdems ).
I almost forget the dalliance with the SWP who tried to use feminine wiles to entrap me- but that’s a different story!
Well, the upshot to my preamble-I have a marked tendency to ‘waffle’,not the edible things but to stray from the point-forgive me….
A New Politics-ta dah!!! Well , here we go.
There should be no higher calling than to serve the public , it shouldn’t be seen as an opportunity for advancement-or to screw the public purse and then take off. Politicians of all current parties are , to my mind almost , to a person unelectable.
There are a plethora of ‘fringe’ parties- all equally unelectable. Common sense-Compassion-Passion-Empathy-Service-Ideals-Vision-Strength-Courage-Ability-Selflessness , all needed now more than ever before in our political system.
All so sadly defined by their very absence from both Government and Opposition.
I remember the time when Civic society was ascendant- a time when serving as a councillor was a privilege, now it’s seen as another opportunity,by many,to achieve Cabinet status and a fair old wedge of cash and personal kudos.
